Birthday cake for a 1 year old princess

Now I’ll be the first to admit, decorating cakes is not my specialty.  But I will also admit the only way I’m ever going to make it my specialty is by doing it.    Well I just had to share a picture of a cake I did this weekend for a “1” year old’s birthday.  It was a lemon cake with raspberry filling.  I think it turned out pretty cute.  I’m hoping the lady who ordered it gives me some feedback.  While I was working on this cake I thought back on some of the things (baking wise) that used to intimidate me that I’m pretty sure now I could do in my sleep.  I’ll let you know when I get to that point with cake decorating.  But I’m sure from my blogs, you will be able to see the improvement as well.  Release your inner baking goddess and try something new!

Is it spring yet?

Is it spring yet?

Well the calendar says it’s “spring” but I beg to differ.  It finally stopped raining (at least for the day) so that’s a very good sign.  Not great weather to try some meringue desserts I’ve been itching to try as meringue is very sensitive to humidity and I’m not about to go up against mother nature.  I guess I’ll just have to be patient for a while longer.  I did try some mini key lime pies that I wanted to practice on for an upcoming baby shower.  I’ll post pictures of the final product when the time comes.  I am going to remain optimistic and identify some new desserts I want to try.  Stay tuned for the results.

Swirled Lollipop Birthday Cake – Success!

When an 8 year old girl included a sketch with her birthday cake order, I knew she meant business.  She had a very specific look in mind for her birthday party and I wasn’t about to disappoint.  She wanted the top of her cake to look like a swirled lollipop and had very specific instructions about the colors allowed.  This request allowed me to try something I’ve been meaning to try for a while which I thought would be a perfect use of this situation, a frozen buttercream transfer.  So, when the time came for her to pick up her cake, I’ll admit I was a bit nervous.  Now keep in mind, I did not pick the color combination.  Well when she saw it, she said “it’s different than I thought but better”.  Whew … that was a close one.  Here’s a picture of the top of the cake sans the birthday candles and three suckers she added to complete the look.  I asked her mom to send me some pictures so hopefully she will.
